PRESS STATEMENT
UNIC STANDS IN SOLIDARITY WITH UKRAINIAN EXHIBITORS AND THE UKRAINIAN PEOPLE FOLLOWING RUSSIAN INVASION
Brussels, 1 March 2022: UNIC, the trade body representing the interests of cinema operators across 39 European territories, has today issued a statement expressing its solidarity not just with Ukrainian exhibitors but also the Ukrainian people as they look to repel the attack on their country by Russian forces.
The statement, issued on behalf of UNIC’s Board of Directors, reads as follows:
‘We have watched with growing horror the death and destruction arising in recent days from the decision of the Russian Government to invade its near-neighbour Ukraine.
We stand in absolute solidarity not just with our Ukrainian colleagues but also the Ukrainian people as they seek to withstand this outrageous and unwarranted attack.
As a wide-ranging European organisation, our membership includes operators and associations in both Russia and the Ukraine. But we cannot stand by and remain silent on such terrible actions and note with huge respect the statements and positions taken by some Russian colleagues in opposition to the war.
There is no division in our minds between our mission to promote the cultural value of cinema-going and our desire to encourage European unity and celebrate the diversity of different European territories.
This attack on all of those principles is therefore to be steadfastly resisted and we wholeheartedly support any measures taken by the international community quickly to bring this bloodshed to an end.
More practically, we stand ready to do all we can to support Ukrainian colleagues when the time comes to rebuild those cinemas destroyed by Russian aggression, so that their audiences can once again enjoy the inclusive big screen experience.’

Bruxelles, 1 marzo 2022: L’Unione Internazionale dei Cinema, che rappresenta 39 territori europei, ha espresso in un comunicato la propria solidarietà ai colleghi e a tutto il popolo ucraino che cerca di respingere l’attacco delle forze russe. Di seguito il testo. Il comunicato, emanato a nome della Presidenza UNIC, è il seguente: “Abbiamo assistito con crescente orrore alla morte e alla distruzione derivanti dalla decisione del governo russo di invadere la vicina Ucraina. Esprimiamo assoluta solidarietà non solo con i nostri colleghi ma anche con il popolo ucraino mentre cerca di resistere a questo attacco oltraggioso e ingiustificato. Il nostro organismo include circuiti e associazioni sia in Russia che in Ucraina, ma non possiamo restare a guardare e tacere su tali terribili azioni, mentre prendiamo atto con grande rispetto delle dichiarazioni e delle posizioni di alcuni colleghi russi, contrari alla guerra. Non c’è divisione nelle nostre menti tra la missione di promuovere il valore culturale del cinema e il desiderio di incoraggiare l’unità europea e celebrare la diversità dei territori europei. L’attacco a tutti questi principi deve dunque essere fermamente contrastato e sosteniamo con tutto il cuore qualsiasi misura adottata dalla comunità internazionale per porre rapidamente fino a questo spargimento di sangue. Più praticamente, siamo pronti a fare tutto il possibile a supporto dei colleghi ucraini quando arriverà il momento di ricostruire i cinema distrutti dall’aggressione russa, in modo che il loro pubblico possa ancora una volta apprezzare l’esperienza inclusiva del grande schermo.
